A call comes in at 9 PM. Water's backing up in a ground-floor unit. You grab your tools, assess the plumbing issue, and have it resolved before it becomes a bigger problem for the resident or the property. That's a normal Tuesday in this role.
MidPen Housing is hiring a Maintenance Technician for Station Center I and Station Center II in Union City, California. These are affordable housing communities serving working families, seniors, and residents with special needs. The work is hands-on and broad in scope.
You'll handle skilled repairs across electrical, plumbing, and carpentry systems. That means troubleshooting circuits and fixtures, repairing water and sewage lines, and completing both structural and finish carpentry work. Unit turns are part of the job too: painting, flooring, fixture installs, and getting vacant units ready for re-occupancy on schedule.
Beyond the unit-level work, you're responsible for landscaping and irrigation upkeep, common area cleanliness and lighting, preventive maintenance schedules, work order documentation, and inventory management. You'll also coordinate with outside contractors, assist with the bidding process, and monitor their work through completion.
This role includes a rotating on-call schedule with 24/7 emergency coverage for seven consecutive days at a time, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. That's a real commitment and worth factoring into your decision.
You'll report to the Community Manager and provide coaching and oversight to Maintenance Groundskeeper staff. Move-ins, move-outs, and annual inspections are also part of your support responsibilities.
Pay runs $25.00 to $28.13 per hour based on experience. MidPen offers a full benefits package including health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan, paid parental leave, education reimbursement, FSA options, an EAP, pet insurance, paid time off, company holidays, and wellness days.
One thing worth noting: technicians who perform well in multi-system roles like this one, especially those who develop comfort with contractor coordination and staff oversight, tend to move into lead technician or maintenance supervisor positions over time. If that's a direction you want to grow, the breadth of this role builds that foundation directly.
