Maintenance Technician

Maintenance work at a residential community means something different every single day. One morning you're turning an apartment after a move-out, tracking down a mystery plumbing leak by afternoon, and getting called on a work order before you've finished your punch list. That's the job at Bedford Commons and Heathermoor, two Berkshire Residential communities looking for a Maintenance Technician who can keep up with that pace without losing their composure.

What You'll Actually Do

You'll own the physical condition of the property. That covers everything from appliance repairs, plumbing, and electrical work to carpentry and general building maintenance. Curb appeal matters here. If something looks off on a walk of the grounds, you're the person who notices it and handles it. You'll manage the shop, keep inventory organized, and maintain key security. You'll also be working alongside management to make sure community standards stay where they need to be, including safety compliance. Residents interact with you directly, so your customer service approach carries real weight for how people feel about living here.

Honestly, the hardest part of this role isn't the technical work. It's the volume and variety. Requests pile up. Priorities shift. You'll need to work through a full plate without letting things slip, and that requires both solid trade skills and decent organizational habits.

What You Bring

  • At least one year of hands-on maintenance experience in a residential community setting
  • Working knowledge across appliances, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general building systems
  • Comfort with computers and property management or work order software
  • Strong written and verbal communication in English
  • HVAC certification is preferred, but Berkshire will consider candidates without it

What separates a strong candidate here isn't just technical range. It's the ability to interact with residents during frustrating moments (a broken A/C in summer, a leak that damaged their belongings) and still leave them feeling like someone actually cared. That combination of trade competence and calm, genuine customer service is rarer than most postings acknowledge.

A Few Other Details

This position includes a $1,000 sign-on bonus, paid out after 90 days of employment. Berkshire also offers three weeks of vacation, a 25% rent discount, personal development plans, and health insurance. They manage their own portfolio rather than operating as a third-party management company, which tends to mean more consistent standards and fewer surprises when it comes to budget approvals for repairs and capex work. That's a practical difference you'll feel when you're trying to get something fixed the right way.
