The laundry room smells like it needs attention, a restroom near the community room hasn't been serviced since morning, and there's a vacated unit on the second floor waiting on a cleaning punch list before the new resident moves in. That's a typical midday at Ira D Hall Square.

The Work

MidPen Housing has operated affordable communities across Northern California since 1970, and Ira D Hall Square in Sunnyvale is one of more than 142 properties in their portfolio serving working families, seniors, and residents with special needs. The Janitor here reports to the Community Manager and works in close coordination with the Maintenance Supervisor to keep the property clean, safe, and presentable every day.

Day-to-day responsibilities include maintaining common areas and grounds, cleaning shared spaces like restrooms, laundry rooms, and trash enclosures, and supporting basic landscaping and site upkeep. When units turn, this role steps in with general cleaning to help get make-readies across the finish line. Routine maintenance support and site safety compliance are also part of the job.

This is physical, consistent work. Expect standing, bending, lifting, and walking for extended periods. The role requires lifting up to 50 pounds, working in confined spaces, and being comfortable on ladders and stairs.

What You Bring

  • High school diploma or GED, plus at least six months of janitorial experience or equivalent background
  • Solid understanding of chemical safety and proper handling of cleaning products
  • Physical stamina for moderate to strenuous activity throughout the shift
  • Genuine alignment with serving a resident population that includes seniors, families, and individuals with special needs

Pay runs $17.69 to $19.90 per hour depending on experience. MidPen's benefits package includes health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan, paid parental leave, FSA options, employee education reimbursement, and pet insurance, among others.

One thing worth noting for anyone new to affordable housing: the resident population here is not anonymous. You're working in people's homes and shared living spaces. Candidates who treat cleanliness as a form of respect for residents, not just a task list, tend to fit MidPen's culture well and stay longer.
