Community Manager

A new international student arrives in August, jet-lagged and unsure where to pay rent or how to get a bus pass. You're the first person they talk to who actually understands both what they're asking and why it's hard to ask.

The International Community Ambassador role at The Carmin in Tempe sits at the intersection of student housing operations and cross-cultural community building. PeakMade Real Estate manages off-campus student communities across the country, and The Carmin serves a significant international student population at Arizona State University. This position is the connective tissue between that population and the broader community: part leasing support, part programming coordinator, part resident advocate.

What This Role Actually Covers

Day to day, you'll communicate with residents and prospects in both Mandarin and English, explaining lease terms, rent obligations, and community policies accurately in both languages. That precision matters. Misunderstood lease terms drive delinquency and dissatisfaction; clear communication up front prevents both. You'll support the leasing team by attracting and converting international student prospects, working leads in person, by phone, and online.

Beyond leasing, you'll plan and execute weekly and monthly cultural programming, onsite and in the surrounding Tempe community. You'll coordinate welcome efforts for the major August and January move-ins and manage farewell logistics during the December and May/July turns. You'll also build relationships with ASU offices and student organizations, including International Student and Scholar Services, the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, and the Indian Students Association, partnering on events and keeping a presence where international students already gather.

What You'll Need Coming In

  • Fluency in Mandarin and English (speaking, reading, and writing) is required, not preferred
  • Current full-time enrollment in a degree program, or a completed bachelor's degree
  • Prior leadership experience: student organizations, resident life, peer mentoring, or comparable roles
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with a genuine ability to engage diverse populations
  • Cultural awareness and experience in multicultural or international settings
  • Availability for evenings and weekends, particularly around major move-in and move-out periods
  • Familiarity with fair housing standards, or the ability to learn them quickly

The skills this role builds are worth naming directly. You'll develop real leasing experience alongside the community management and programming skills that carry well into Resident Services Manager or Assistant Community Manager positions. Bilingual leasing professionals with cultural programming backgrounds are genuinely scarce in student housing, and the experience here translates directly to those next steps.

Strong candidates will bring more than language fluency. The students who thrive in this role tend to understand the specific friction points of being a first-year international student at a large American university, because they've lived some version of it themselves. That lived context shapes programming that actually draws residents, and conversations that build real trust.
