Affordable housing compliance sits at the intersection of federal regulation, state agency oversight, and day-to-day property operations. When a portfolio spans multiple programs, HUD, LIHTC, HOME, RD, the margin for error is thin. Asset Living, one of the largest third-party management firms in the country and a consistent NMHC top 50 operator, is hiring an Affordable Compliance Manager to hold that line across an assigned portfolio of properties.
This is a senior-level compliance position, fully remote, that functions as both a subject matter expert and a support layer for the compliance staff beneath you. You're not processing certifications yourself day to day. You're reviewing them, catching errors before they become audit findings, and making sure your team is equipped to get it right the first time. That means peer reviews of manager and assistant manager certifications, maintaining compliance trackers and SharePoint workbooks, and keeping quarterly and annual reporting on time and accurate.
Audit readiness is a significant part of the job. You'll prepare pre-onsite documentation for agency file audits, coach compliance staff through the process, and support corrective action responses when findings come back. Significant deficiencies go up to the VP of Compliance, but you're the first line of analysis and the person who knows the portfolio well enough to anticipate where the risk lives before an auditor walks in the door.
You'll also interface regularly with regional management, syndicators, and clients. That's an important detail. Syndicator relationships in affordable housing carry their own compliance expectations tied to investor reporting and regulatory agreements, so the ability to communicate clearly across operational and financial stakeholders matters here.
Candidates who stand out tend to have worked inside a third-party management environment before, where the compliance function serves multiple clients simultaneously rather than a single owner. That context sharpens your ability to manage competing priorities across a portfolio without letting any single property's issues drag the rest off schedule.
One honest note on the work: affordable compliance at scale means you're regularly fielding urgent questions from the field during periods of agency activity or regulatory change. The remote setup offers flexibility, but the role demands responsiveness. Staying current on program guidance isn't a quarterly task here. It's ongoing, and sharing those updates with your team is part of the job description.
