A resident flags a piece of litter near the building entrance at 8 a.m. By the time the morning is underway, the walkway is clear, the common areas are checked, and the property looks the way it should. That's the rhythm of this role.
Fairstead is an affordable housing owner and operator with a portfolio of more than 30,000 apartments across 28 states. This Porter position is based at one of their Newark properties. The work is hands-on and exterior-focused: daily property walks, trash and debris removal, maintaining curb appeal, and keeping common areas clean and safe for residents.
You'll also assist with light maintenance and repairs to community features as needed. Resident interactions happen regularly, so basic customer service skills matter. The job requires weekend availability and on-call flexibility.
Pay runs $16 to $19 per hour depending on experience and location. Benefits include medical insurance through Meritain Health with a strong employer contribution, employer-paid vision and life insurance, a 401(k) with company match (100% on the first 3%, 50% on the next 2%), 15 days of PTO, 7 sick days, and 12 or more paid holidays.
One thing worth knowing: Porter roles at affordable housing properties tend to carry more resident-facing responsibility than similar positions at market-rate sites. Fairstead's residents rely on well-kept common spaces and responsive staff. Showing up consistently and communicating issues quickly carries real weight here.
