Maintenance Technician

Maintenance work at the apartment level is a craft, and this role at J Harbor Park at North Point in Reston, VA gives you the foundation to build it properly. Jefferson Apartment Group operates across acquisition, development, construction, and property management, so the people doing hands-on work at their communities are part of a larger operation that takes quality seriously. This is a 190-unit community, and the technician here touches a broad range of tasks daily.

Skills This Role Requires

You'll come in with a working knowledge of basic maintenance tools and common repair tasks. HVAC filter changes, light replacements, unit inspections, and make-ready assistance all require competence with your hands and the confidence to work efficiently without supervision. The ability to lift 50 to 100 pounds and move comfortably throughout the property, climbing stairs, kneeling, bending, and working in tight spaces, is a real physical requirement here, not a formality. On-call availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays is part of the role. That's worth understanding before you apply.

Customer service matters as much as technical skill. Residents expect timely responses and work that's done right the first time. If you've worked in a service environment and know how to communicate calmly with people who are frustrated, that transfers directly to this job.

What You'll Be Doing Day to Day

A typical day here involves a mix of scheduled preventive maintenance and reactive service. You'll change filters and clean AC vents in both occupied units and vacant ones, assist senior technicians with service requests, support make-ready turns, handle janitorial tasks, and help keep the common areas and breezeways clean and presentable. You'll also help distribute resident communications. It's work that spans the full physical property, so you'll get to know the community well.

Skills This Role Builds

For a technician early in their multifamily career, this role builds something valuable: pattern recognition. When you're working across a 190-unit community on preventive maintenance and service requests, you start to understand how systems behave over time, which units need attention before residents call, and how to prioritize effectively. That operational instinct is what separates an experienced technician from someone just completing tickets. Technicians who develop that skill at this stage tend to move into lead or head maintenance roles faster.

Jefferson Apartment Group is growing, and that matters for career trajectory. Companies with active development and acquisition pipelines tend to have real internal mobility, and technicians who perform well at the property level are well-positioned when new communities come online.
