Skills That Drive This Role

Porter work at a mixed-use property like Comstock's Reston portfolio asks more of you than basic custodial tasks. You're reading a space constantly: noticing a spill before a resident slips, spotting a burned-out light in a garage stairwell, flagging a chemical storage issue before it becomes a safety report. The skills that matter here are observational discipline, physical stamina, and the kind of reliability that a shift-based operation genuinely depends on. This is a Wednesday through Sunday position, 3PM to 10PM, covering plaza and garage areas during the hours they see the most resident and visitor traffic.

Reston's mixed-use density, especially around Town Center, means common areas cycle through commuters, diners, residents, and event crowds within the same evening. A porter working those hours isn't just cleaning in a quiet building. You're maintaining presentation while people are actively using the space, which takes a certain composure and guest-service instinct alongside the physical work.

What the Work Actually Covers

Day-to-day responsibilities include keeping lobbies, sidewalks, restrooms, and public spaces clean and presentable throughout the shift. Pressure washing assigned areas, collecting trash, cleaning windows, and following scheduled checklists are all part of the routine. You'll also support event setup and breakdown when needed, which on some evenings means pivoting quickly between cleaning tasks and logistical support.

  • Complete assigned cleaning and maintenance tasks per the Senior Operations Manager's direction
  • Wear the approved ParkX Porter uniform and arrive on-site before shift start
  • Monitor and report safety hazards, equipment damage, or maintenance issues
  • Track cleaning supply inventory and handle chemicals safely and correctly
  • Maintain the supply room and storage areas in organized, hazard-free condition
  • Complete end-of-shift documentation and hand off responsibilities to the incoming team
  • Cover shifts for colleagues when absences arise

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver's license with no major violations. Physical demands are real: expect to be on your feet for the full shift, lift up to 50 pounds, and work in variable outdoor and indoor conditions including heat, cold, and exposure to cleaning chemicals.

What Sets Strong Candidates Apart

The qualifications list includes reliability and integrity at the top, and that's accurate to what this role actually requires. A porter who follows checklists precisely, communicates clearly when something needs management attention, and shows up consistently is far more valuable than someone with more experience who cuts corners on documentation or chemical handling. Strong candidates also bring a genuine service orientation. You'll interact with residents and visitors regularly during busy evening hours, and how you handle those moments reflects directly on the property's reputation.

Comstock offers medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) matching, life insurance, free parking with EV charging, parental leave, and annual professional development funds. The company operates an expanding portfolio, which means internal growth opportunities exist for people who perform well and want to move into maintenance or operations roles over time.
