Desk Clerk roles at affordable housing communities carry more weight than a typical front-desk job. You're often the first person a resident sees in a crisis, the last line of building security at night, and the connective tissue between management and the people who actually live there. At MidPen Housing's Ira D. Hall Square in Sunnyvale, that context matters.

What the Work Actually Looks Like

This is a part-time evening position, Monday through Friday, 6PM to 10PM. During those hours, you're the point of contact for everyone entering and leaving the building. You'll greet and screen visitors, maintain the front desk log, monitor the camera system, answer phones, and write incident reports when something happens. Administrative tasks round out the shift: filing, distributing notices, completing work orders, and keeping the lobby and entrance area tidy and professional.

You'll report to the Community Manager and work within MidPen's Fair Housing and community policy guidelines. The expectation is that you apply those policies consistently and communicate clearly with residents, guests, and staff.

What You Bring

  • A high school diploma or GED and at least one year of receptionist or administrative experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort with basic computer tasks, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Flexibility to handle varied tasks as they come up during a shift
  • Genuine alignment with the mission of providing stable, dignified housing to people who need it

Where This Role Can Lead

Evening desk roles at mission-driven housing organizations are a real entry point into property management. The skills you build here, specifically incident documentation, resident relations, and policy enforcement, are the same ones that Community Managers look for in Leasing Consultants and Resident Services Coordinators. MidPen manages over 142 properties across Northern California, which means internal mobility is a realistic path for people who prove themselves reliable and mission-aligned.

Affordable housing also gives you exposure to a population mix and a compliance environment that builds genuine fluency fast. If you eventually want to move into site management or resident services coordination, time spent in a desk role at an affordable community teaches you things a Class A lease-up position simply won't.

The pay range for this position is $17.69 to $19.90 per hour, based on experience. MidPen offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, retirement, and paid time off, even for part-time staff, which is not the norm in this industry.
