Skills That Drive This Role

This position lives at the intersection of two demanding skill sets: sharp document review and genuinely warm human communication. Cortland's centralized contact center handles application volume across a large multifamily portfolio, which means the person in this seat needs to hold both of those things at once, often in the same conversation. You're reading through an application with compliance in mind while also reassuring a nervous prospective resident that their paperwork is in good hands. Bilingual fluency (English and Spanish) isn't a nice-to-have here. It's the point. Many applicants moving through this pipeline communicate primarily in Spanish, and your ability to guide them clearly through one of the more stressful housing decisions they'll make carries real weight.

Strong candidates in this role tend to be precise without being cold. They catch a missing document before it causes a delay, update multiple applicants simultaneously without letting anyone feel like a number, and de-escalate a frustrated caller without losing the thread of the task they were working on before the phone rang. That combination, accuracy under volume and interpersonal steadiness, is harder to find than it sounds.

What You'll Be Doing Day to Day

Your work sits in the application-to-move-in window of the leasing process. You'll review and process rental applications, collect and verify supporting documentation, and maintain compliance with Fair Housing standards and company policy throughout. A good portion of your time goes to inbound communication: calls, emails, and chat inquiries from applicants who are somewhere in the process and need an update, a clarification, or a next step. Cortland uses platforms including Funnel, OneSite, and RealPage, so comfort with property management software matters, as does a willingness to adapt when systems or workflows shift.

  • Process and review applications accurately, keeping pace with a high-volume queue
  • Collect, verify, and track applicant documentation with discretion and attention to detail
  • Respond to inbound calls, emails, and chat in both English and Spanish
  • Communicate proactively with multiple applicants at various stages of the process
  • Handle escalated or sensitive situations with patience and a practical focus on resolution
  • Uphold Fair Housing compliance in every interaction without exception

Weekend availability and occasional extended hours come with the territory. Application volume doesn't always follow a Monday-through-Friday schedule, and this team is expected to flex with it.

What's Distinctive About This Role at Cortland

Cortland operates with a vertically integrated model, meaning design, construction, and property management all sit under one roof. For someone in a contact center role, that structure has a practical upside: there's real organizational depth behind you. When a process question surfaces or a policy needs clarification, you're not waiting on a third-party management company to respond. You're working inside a system built to move.

This role also offers a clear window into how centralized leasing operations function at scale, which is increasingly the direction the multifamily industry is heading. Contact center leasing models are growing across large operators, and experience managing the full application-to-move-in cycle in a centralized environment transfers well to leasing management, compliance coordination, or operations roles down the line. If you're precise, people-oriented, and genuinely bilingual, this is a position where those qualities get used every single day.
