Assistant Property Manager

Multifamily communities run on dozens of moving parts at once, and the Assistant Community Manager is the person who holds a lot of those threads together on any given day. At Hawthorne at Weaverville, a Hawthorne Residential Partners community tucked into the Asheville, NC area, this role sits right at the intersection of leasing, resident relations, and financial administration. It's a real second-seat position, which means you're doing meaningful work, not just shadowing.

What You're Actually Doing Day to Day

Your week will shift depending on what the community needs. Some mornings start with ledger reviews and delinquency follow-up calls. Others begin with a prospect tour, helping someone picture their next home. You'll process rent payments, post charges, scan checks, and make sure the financial records stay clean and current. When renewals come due, you're guiding residents through that process too. And when the Community Manager is out, you're the one keeping the team focused and the office running.

The leasing side of this role is active, not passive. You're responding to leads, conducting tours, and supporting occupancy goals through both new leases and retention efforts. You'll also manage the community's social media presence, which means real content creation tied to resident events and community life, not just reposting flyers.

Resident concerns come with the territory. When someone's frustrated, you're the person in the room helping de-escalate and find a resolution. That takes patience and follow-through in equal measure.

Who Tends to Thrive Here

  • Two years of property management experience, with at least some time in a leasing or assistant-level role
  • Comfort working with financial reports, ledgers, and rent collection workflows
  • Strong communication skills across residents, prospects, vendors, and teammates
  • A valid driver's license; a CALP designation is a plus
  • Availability for a schedule that includes Saturdays and occasional evenings for resident events

The candidates who do well in roles like this one aren't just organized. They're good at reading people. Knowing when a resident complaint needs a policy answer versus when it needs a human moment is a skill that doesn't show up on a resume, but it shows up fast on the job.

Hawthorne offers a structured career path, and this role is a recognized step toward Community Manager. Their Learning and Development program is designed to support that progression rather than leave it to chance. Compensation includes hourly pay plus monthly leasing and renewal commissions, quarterly performance bonuses, and a benefits package that covers medical, dental, vision, 401k match, paid parental leave, and pet insurance, among other options.
