Donner Lofts is a permanent supportive housing community in San Jose, and this role sits at the center of everything that keeps it functioning. MidPen Housing has operated affordable communities across Northern California since 1970, and this Senior Community Manager position reflects the complexity that comes with that track record. The population here includes residents experiencing housing instability and other significant challenges, so the work requires more than standard property management competency.
Day to day, you're overseeing rent collection, HUD compliance, certifications, and inspections while also supervising on-site staff and coordinating with service partners who provide resident support programs. Vendor management, invoicing, budget tracking, and variance reporting are steady parts of the job. So are tenant relations, lease enforcement, and the occasional eviction process handled with care and documentation. When emergencies arise, you respond and you lead.
What separates strong candidates here from average ones isn't just affordable housing experience, though that matters. It's the ability to hold both accountability and compassion at once. Residents in permanent supportive housing often have complex histories. A manager who defaults to pure compliance thinking will struggle. So will one who avoids difficult conversations. The people who do well in this environment understand trauma-informed approaches without abandoning the operational standards the property requires.
Yardi proficiency and familiarity with HUD regulatory requirements are expected. ARM or COS certifications are preferred and will be weighted in the review process. A valid California Real Estate license and a reliable insured vehicle are required for this role.
Pay runs between $36.81 and $41.41 per hour depending on experience. MidPen offers a full benefits package including health, dental, vision, a 403(b) retirement plan, paid parental leave, education reimbursement, and an EAP program, among others.
This role is based on-site at Donner Lofts in San Jose. MidPen has been recognized as a Great Place to Work in 2025, and their portfolio of more than 130 properties reflects an organization that has stayed active and stable in the affordable housing space for over five decades.
