Leasing Consultant

Leasing is often described as a sales job, and that's technically true. But at the property level, it's also the first real impression a future resident gets of where they're going to live. That gap between "sales transaction" and "someone choosing a home" is where this role actually lives.

Paragon Properties is hiring a Leasing Consultant for their Southfield, Michigan community. Starting pay is $18.50 per hour and is negotiable based on prior leasing experience. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position with a benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage with a short waiting period, paid time off, nine paid holidays, a 401(k) with employer contribution, company-paid life and disability insurance, and a rent discount. There's also a move-in bonus tied to leasing activity, which rewards the work directly.

What the Day-to-Day Actually Looks Like

You'll handle the full leasing cycle: phone and walk-in traffic, tours, application processing, move-in paperwork, and renewal coordination. A good chunk of the job is communication, both the kind that closes a lease and the kind that keeps a current resident from leaving. You'll inspect vacant units and models to make sure they're show-ready, follow up on work orders to confirm resident satisfaction, and help with outreach to local businesses and employers. Resident events are part of the mix too.

The administrative side is real. Processing applications, preparing paperwork for manager review, and keeping documentation accurate all require genuine attention to detail. Yardi experience is a plus here. Fair Housing knowledge matters too, because mistakes in that area carry consequences.

What Paragon Is Looking For

  • At least one year in a customer service or sales role; six or more months of on-site leasing experience preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred
  • Comfort with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); Yardi experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of Fair Housing regulations preferred
  • Strong sales instincts and genuine follow-through

Pre-employment background check, drug screening, and physical are required before starting.

One thing worth noting for candidates coming from retail or hospitality: leasing has a learning curve that's less about personality and more about process. The people skills translate immediately. What takes time is understanding lease terms, application workflows, and how to handle objections specific to housing decisions. Paragon offers a training program, which helps, but candidates who already know how to read a lease or have touched property management software will get up to speed faster and feel less overwhelmed in the first 90 days. This role can also move into an Assistant Manager position for someone who develops the administrative and financial side of the work.
