Leasing Consultant
The Scion GroupStudent housing leasing runs on relationship skills more than almost any other residential category. At Verve in New Brunswick, The Scion Group is hiring an Experience Team Member (their title for a Leasing Consultant) who can build genuine rapport with college-aged renters, convert interest into signed leases, and keep daily operations running smoothly behind the front desk.
Skills This Role Demands From Day One
The core of this position is sales through service. You'll conduct community and amenity tours, field objections, and work through sales initiatives set by the management team. That requires you to read people quickly, adjust your pitch to different communication styles, and follow through consistently. Student prospects often tour with parents present, so your audience can shift mid-conversation, and your ability to speak to both a 19-year-old and their parent simultaneously matters.
Beyond sales, the role asks for real administrative reliability. You'll manage package logging and retrieval, maintain office and common area cleanliness, schedule maintenance requests, and handle after-hours lockout coverage on rotation. These tasks reward people who stay organized under interruption and treat the small stuff as seriously as the high-visibility work.
Social media and local marketing support round out the responsibilities. You'll contribute to content, assist with planning resident engagement events, and flag marketing opportunities in the surrounding New Brunswick community. Rutgers University drives the rental demand here, so understanding the academic calendar and what motivates a student renter is directly useful.
Skills This Role Builds
Most leasing consultants who grow into assistant manager or property manager roles cite their time on the leasing floor as where they developed their instincts for traffic patterns, objection handling, and lease-up momentum. This role teaches you to track what's working in your sales approach and communicate that feedback up to management, which is exactly the analytical habit that separates strong candidates from those who plateau early.
Student housing specifically builds a comfort with high-volume, seasonal intensity. Turn periods in this sector are compressed and demanding. You'll develop the operational stamina and organizational systems that transfer well to any multifamily context later in your career.
What Makes This Role Worth Noting
Scion operates exclusively in the student housing space, which means the culture and the training around it are purpose-built for that market. You're not working a student property at a company that mostly does conventional multifamily. The focus shows in how the role is structured and titled.
- Prior leasing or customer service experience preferred, though not always required
- Availability during summer, holidays, and Turn periods is a firm requirement
- After-hours on-call rotation is part of the schedule
- Work authorization required; visa sponsorship is not available
- Hourly rate is set at $15.92 per hour, per New Jersey pay scale, with bonus and benefits included in total compensation
If you're looking to build a career in property management and want your early experience to be in a specialized, high-engagement segment of the industry, student housing is one of the best training grounds available. This position is a concrete starting point for that path.
