Helper A - Residential Maintenance Technician Local 399
Reside LivingThis is a union maintenance position at The Belmont, a residential property at 3170 N Sheridan Rd in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. You'd be working Tuesday through Saturday, 2pm to 10pm, under Local 399 at a starting rate of $29.39 per hour.
The shift matters here. An evening schedule means you're the person residents reach when something goes wrong after work hours. Service requests, water infiltration reports, after-hours calls when you're on rotation. You'll work under and alongside the Building Engineer, handling work orders, assisting with apartment turns, running preventative maintenance tasks like HVAC filter swaps and sewer rodding, and coordinating vendor access when repairs go beyond the scope of in-house work. Janitorial and grounds duties are also part of the job, including snow removal when Chicago winters demand it.
Reside Living expects EPA certification and at least one year of full-time maintenance experience. Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and hot water systems are the core mechanical skills they want. You'll document your work through a mobile app, so comfort with a smartphone and basic computer literacy matters.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- EPA certification (current)
- Minimum one year of full-time maintenance or related field experience
- Familiarity with mechanical systems: plumbing, electric, HVAC, hot water heaters
- Proficiency with Outlook and Microsoft Suite
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs regularly; occasional heavier loads with assistance
- Comfortable on ladders, stairs, and on your feet for the majority of your shift
Benefits come through Local 399 and include full health coverage. Reside also offers free employee parking, a $50 monthly phone stipend, and a 25% rent discount after 90 days, which carries real weight given Lakeview rental prices.
One thing worth knowing about this shift: the 2pm to 10pm window is quieter for coordinating vendors and project work, but busier for resident interaction. Most residents are home by then. That means your customer service manner shows up constantly, not just when you choose to engage. Strong candidates in this type of role understand that how you talk to a resident in the hallway is as much a part of the job as fixing what brought you there.
