Groundskeeper / Porter

Valet trash service has become a standard amenity at Class A and B multifamily communities, and the person running that service sets the tone for how residents experience the property every single evening. This role at Cortland's Reserve at Abbie Lakes community in Canal Winchester, OH puts you at the center of that daily touchpoint.

What This Role Actually Involves

Each shift, you'll walk the property routes collecting resident waste bags from doorsteps, transferring them into leak-proof carts, and disposing of material into onsite compactors or containers. The work covers more than just the doors: dog waste stations, pool areas, mail kiosks, and other common spaces all fall under your route. You'll clear debris, clean spills, and keep sidewalks, parking lots, and compactor areas presentable. When you encounter improper or prohibited waste, you handle it correctly and document it. Every shift gets logged through a mobile app, start and end times included, with photos where required. You'll need a valid Class E driver's license and your own smartphone to do the job properly.

Physically, this role demands sustained effort. You're climbing stairs, walking long distances across the property, and lifting up to 50 lbs, all outdoors in Ohio weather across every season. Strong odors come with the territory.

Skills This Role Requires vs. Skills It Builds

You need to come in with a working knowledge of EPA and OSHA regulations around waste handling, plus at least one year of experience in waste services or a customer-facing role. Safe equipment operation, the ability to follow written procedures, and genuine professionalism with residents and staff are requirements from day one.

What this role builds is different. Valet trash technicians who do the work consistently and communicate well become the most visible service presence on a property. You'll sharpen your documentation habits, develop an eye for site conditions that affect resident satisfaction and property appearance, and build a reputation with on-site management that carries real weight. Bilingual ability is a plus here, given how it improves resident interactions.
